TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
It’s been believed Inter Miami CF would have the inside track as the MLS team most likely to land Lionel Messi.
But an ESPN report suggests New York City FC may have the greatest shot if the best player of his generation signs with Manchester City.
Messi’s deal with Manchester City would reportedly include a clause for a move to sister club NYCFC after three years in the Premier League. The report also said an offer could include offering Messi a chance to be City Football Group ambassador.
Manchester City are tabbed as favorites to land Messi, after reports on Tuesday said the 33-year-old was intent on leaving Barcelona.
ESPN reports City, and former Barcelona, coach Pep Guardiola has already reached out to Messi to explain how he’d fit in there and Manchester City are reportedly weighing the potential financials of such a deal to see if it's viable.
A sticking point could be whether Messi can move on a free transfer or if his €700 million release clause would need to be triggered. There are conflicting reports on if the deadline for that clause in his contract has passed.
A former Barcelona star playing in the Bronx? Wouldn’t be the first time.
