TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS:Report
Columbus Crew SC endured a 2019 campaign full of ups and downs but a new report suggests they will be looking abroad to bolster the defensive line.
Norwegian outlet TV 2 reported Wednesday that Columbus are set to sign Dutch defender Vito Wormgoor, who just wrapped up his season with Norwegian club Brann.
Wormgoor, 31, has spent his entire career to date in Europe, getting his start at FC Utrecht before moving on to fellow Dutch clubs De Graafschap and ADO Den Haag. In 2016 he moved to Norway, first to play for Aalesund and since 2017, Brann. In 2019 Wormgoor played 30 league games for Brann, captaining the side and finishing second of the team in scoring, with five goals, from a center back position. He is also a former Dutch youth international.
The report claims "only details remain" for Wormgoor to join Columbus, which finished in 10th place in 2019, Caleb Porter's first in charge of the first team. Veteran Jonathan Mensah is set to return, and the Crew picked upAxel Sjoberg off waivers on Wednesday, but the team would seem to be in the market for another veteran central defender ahead of 2020.
