TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
Atlanta United are close to signing River Plate midfielder Santiago Sosa, per reports from Argentine outlet TyC Sports and Felipe Cardenas of The Athletic.
Sosa, a 21-year-old defensive midfielder, has made 21 appearances for River Plate since turning pro during the 2018 season, including seven games in the Copa Libertadores. He has also registered nine appearances with Argentina’s U-20 national team, as highlighted by four matches at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
While Sosa is yet to score for River Plate, he could present a deep-lying midfield option for the Five Stripes as they enter the Gabriel Heinze era. Heinze became Atlanta’s head coach in December, joining after a managerial stint at Velez Sarsfield.
Sosa's Argentine Primera Division background would fit a potential trend under Heinze, with the club already signing veteran forward Lisandro Lopez via a free transfer from Racing Club. While at River Plate, Sosa was in and out of manager Marcelo Gallardo’s lineup.
