Their Round-of-16 duel in sweltering Fortaleza was lauded as one of the most dramatic games of the 2014 World Cup, and now Mexico and the Netherlands will meet again – this time in Amsterdam.
The Mexican federation announced on Wednesday that El Tri will visit Die Oranje for an international friendly on Nov. 12.
The occasion provides head coach Miguel “Piojo” Herrera and his men with an opportunity to avenge the Netherlands' controversial 2-1 World Cup triumph in June, a result which lives in infamy among Mexican fans thanks to the injury-time penalty kick earned by Dutch winger Arjen Robben to set up Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's late winner.
The match represents another stop for Mexico on a fall European trip – the team's first such journey in four years – that already includes a meeting with Belarus six days later.
El Tri are also scheduled to visit the United States for two friendlies next month: A clash with fellow World Cup participants Chile in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sept. 6 and a match against Bolivia at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids, in Commerce City, Colo., on Sept. 9.
