Red Bulls reserves fall to Crew

John Wolyniec scored the goal for the Red Bulls reserves in their loss to the Crew.

The Columbus Crew earned a 3-1 win over the New York Red Bulls in MLS Reserve League action Sunday morning at Montclair State University. Cory Elenio scored two goals and Jason Garey tallied another after John Wolyniec put the Red Bulls in front.

The Red Bulls took the lead in the 11th minute. David Roth took a shot that was blocked by goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni. However, Wolyniec was there to tap in the rebound. Columbus had a good scoring chance later when George Josten fired a low shot that Red Bulls goalkeeper Terry Boss had to paw away.

New York almost went two-up before halftime when Danleigh Borman slid the ball to Wolyniec in the penalty box. However, Schoeni was quick off his line to knock Wolyniec's shot away.

Columbus tied the game a minute before the break. Elenio got behind the Red Bulls defense from a Garey through ball and he rolled his shot past Boss. The Crew then took the lead eight minutes after the half. Josten slid the ball through to Garey, who beat the last defender and put his shot past goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell.

Columbus almost extended its advantage in the 78th minute when Ryan Junge had a free header on goal but Patterson-Sewell dived to tip it over the ball. Moments later, Borman was in alone on Schoeni and he was not able to get a shot off.

With the Red Bulls pushed up, Columbus sealed the game in the 86th minute. Garey found a wide-open Elenio, who took a touch before blasting it past Patterson-Sewell.

The Red Bulls ended their 2008 MLS Reserve League season with a 3-7-2 (11 pts.) record while Columbus finished with a 4-5-2 (14 pts.) record.
