Red Bulls fight to draw with Chivas

Jon Conway made several key saves in the second half to preserve the Red Bulls' draw.

himself a speedy runner -- was forced to tug at Richards' jersey to slow him down.

The tactic didn't work, though, and Richards found himself in a one-on-one breakaway with only Brad Guzan to beat. As Richards entered the penalty area he hit a right-footed shot that rolled wide left of the goal. After the play, Bornstein was given a yellow card for his challenge.

Moments later, Richards caused problems for Chivas USA -- and Bornstein -- yet again. Richards again found the ball with space in the Chivas USA half and raced towards goal. This time, however, Bornstein fouled Richards before he got past him. The foul was costly for Chivas USA.

Dave van den Bergh took the ensuing free kick, sending a bending ball in from the right flank. Kevin Goldthwaite jumped to try to head the ball as it sailed into the area but the ball was just out of reach. Guzan, though, had expected a shot only to instead watch as the ball hooked into the left side of the goal, giving the Red Bulls the 26th minute lead.

After the goal, Chivas USA made an adjustment, moving speedy midfielder Francisco Mendoza to the back line to try to keep up with Richards.

In the 35th minute it was the Red Bulls defense that came up with a big play when defender Hunter Freeman cleared a ball off the Red Bulls goal line after Bornstein chipped a shot over an onrushing Jon Conway from inside the penalty area.

Just before the halftime whistle, though, a defensive gaffe gave Chivas USA the equalizer. Goldthwaite held the ball on the left flank in the Red Bulls defensive end when he sent a pass towards central defender Jeff Parke, who moved ahead without seeing the pass. The ball rolled behind him and Ante Razov snatched up the loose ball at the edge of the penalty area, hitting a first-time shot past Conway and sending the teams into the locker rooms even.

Chivas USA came out in the second half looking for the go-ahead goal as they swapped a defender for a forward when Atiba Harris entered the match for Jim Curtin.

Conway kept things even with a pair of brilliant saves in the 52nd minute. First, Conway made a diving save on a Razov free kick before scrambling to knock away a Justin Braun attempt from close range moments later.

The Red Bulls struggled to put pressure on the Chivas USA defense for much of the remainder of the match and were limited to long range attempts.

The match ended in a deadlock and the Red Bulls now look forward to two more road dates, July 4 at Colorado and July 10 at Kansas City.
