Player of the Matchday

Real Salt Lake's Nick Rimando wins Week 1's Player of the Week with stellar showing vs. LA Galaxy

Nick Rimando's stellar form from last year carried right over into the 2014 season opener, and the veteran goalkeeper won this campaign's initial MLS Player of the Week award as a result.

Rimando was voted Week 1's best player for his impressive nine-save performance in Real Salt Lake's 1-0 road victory over the LA Galaxy this past Saturday, a performance that included a clutch penalty kick save against Robbie Keane in stoppage time that preserved the result for RSL and debuting head coach Jeff Cassar.

The US national team netminder edged out Dynamo forward Will Bruin for the Week 1 award by a 12-9 vote. (See how the North American Soccer Reporters voted here.) Bruin shined for Houston in their season opener at BBVA Compass Stadium, scoring a brace and delivering an assist in a 4-0 rout of the New England Revolution.
