One point separates the fourth-place San Jose Earthquakes from fifth-place Real Salt Lake as the sides meet in a pivotal Western Conference six-pointer at Rio Tinto Stadium Wednesday night.
After six matches without defeat, Real Salt Lake (13-11-4) have lost two of their last three, including a 1-0 defeat to the Portland Timbers at Providence Park August 31. Diego Valeri scored the lone goal in the 16th minute and Kelyn Rowe, Damir Krellach and Albert Rusnak all threatened, but RSL were denied the equalizer.
The Quakes (13-10-5) made it back-to-back wins after three consecutive defeats, beating Orlando City SC, 3-0, at Avaya Stadium August 31. Magnus Eriksson opened the scoring on three minutes and Chris Wondolowski struck for a brace in a 13-minute span later in the first half to lead San Jose to a comfortable home win.
This is the second meeting this season with the Quakes winning, 1-0, at Avaya Stadium July 6. Danny Hoesen came off the substitutes bench to score the dramatic stoppage-time winner.
