Real Salt Lake and LAFC will renew their budding rivalry on the U.S. Open Cup stage for the first time when the Western Conference foes square off in the fourth round Tuesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.
LAFC have won all three MLS regular-season meetings, but RSL have a 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs victory under their belt.
Real Salt Lake
A year after losing to Sporting Kansas City in the fourth round, Real Salt Lake are hoping to avoid an early ouster and reverse their recent league trend. The Claret-and-Cobalt have suffered back-to-back league losses, including a 4-0 defeat to the New York Red Bulls in Mike Petke’s return to Red Bull Arena.
RSL are 11-13-3 all-time in the USOC, reaching the final in 2013, where they lost to D.C. United. The teams met once this season, with Diego Rossi canceling out Damir Kreilach’s opening goal and Walker Zimmerman scoring the 92nd-minute winner for LAFC at Banc of California Stadium on March 23.
Los Angeles Football Club
LAFC enter the competition riding an eight-match MLS unbeaten streak after a 3-2 win over the Portland Timbers, spoiling the grand reopening of Providence Park on June 1. Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi staked the visitors a 2-0 lead after 34 minutes. Eight minutes after Cristhian Paredes pulled the Timbers to within a goal, Latif Blessing extended LAFC’s lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute.
In their inaugural season a year ago, LAFC made a run to the USOC semifinals, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Houston Dynamo, 7-6, on penalty kicks after the sides played to a thrilling 3-3 draw.
