The will-he-won’t-he conversation around Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale and a possible MLS future has taken another turn, with the 30-year-old noting that he’s open to such a move.
Bale, also a star for the Wales national team, said as much on a recent episode of the The Hat-Trick presented by ICC, a bi-weekly podcast hosted by Charlie Stillitano, Ray Hudson and Neil Barnett.
“I think it’s a league that’s on the up and still rising,” Bale said. “I think a lot more players want to come over to America now and play. I’d definitely be interested in it. I love going to Los Angeles on holiday and stuff like that.”
The last part will pique the interest of LAFC and LA Galaxy supporters alike, with the El Trafico rivals home to some of MLS’s highest-profile players.
Bale burst onto the scene as a Southampton academy product in 2006, and then enjoyed six sterling years at Tottenham Hotspur. That prompted a move to Real Madrid in 2013, when he became one of the La Liga club’s Galacticos and has won four UEFA Champions League titles.
Bale has struggled to carve out a consistent role at Real Madrid this season, and is reportedly under contract until the summer of 2022. While Bale’s agent previously said he’s "very unlikely" to leave Real Madrid over the summer, the winger has taken notice of MLS’s rise and potential.
“I really, really like the league," Bale said. "I think it’s grown so much over the years. When we come over and play them now in preseason, the games are difficult. The standard is getting a lot better and I think all the clubs are improving, the facilities are improving, stadiums are improving.”
