With American Idol participant and Katy, Texas resident Kady Malloy set to sing the national anthem before Saturday's game (and sign some autographs at Amigo Energy SoccerFest, too), we sat down to check in on her thoughts on the competition and to find out how much she knows about the Dynamo.
HoustonDynamo.com: Let's start with some American Idol questions. What was the biggest high you experienced on American Idol?
Kady Malloy: When I was backstage after I sang my first song, a lady came up to me and told me how beautiful the performance and my voice were. She said I would make it far in the industry. I didn't know who it was, but it turned out to be Priscilla Presley. I was thrilled!
HD: Which of the other participants were the nicest?
KM: I've remained friends with about half of the contestants - Asia'h, Ramiele, Danny Noriega, Michael Johns and Jason Yeager - and we talk all the time. I also went to visit Alana recently, and Colton Berry came to visit me.
HD: How has your life changed since going on the show?
KM: Well, my fan base has really grown - with Kady's Kadets and all, it's actually the fourth largest fan base from the show. And I've been flying everywhere, which I'd never done by myself before, so I've had to get over my fear of flying. I've also been getting a lot of different offers to do different things, and I've gotten a lot more comfortable being on TV and on the radio.
HD: What's it like watching the later rounds of American Idol after having participated?
KM: It's a little predictable, because I know what happens behind the scenes, and I know some of their secrets. I feel bad when I hear some of the comments about my friends or when Simon is mean to other contestants.
HD: Who do you think will win this year's competition?
KM: I think and I hope that David Cook will win.
HD: Okay, now we're going to ask you a little bit about soccer and see what you know. What's your background in soccer, if any?
KM: I like to watch the guys play, so I'm a fan, but not a huge fan.
HD: Do you have a most memorable experience performing the national anthem?
KM: Yeah, actually, just last week I performed the national anthem for the Rockets' playoff game, and it was a great experience.
HD: What's it like to sing in front of a Houston-area crowd, since you're from the area?
KM: I love to sing in my hometown and in the area, because the fans are so loyal. They're just great fans.
HD: Do you have a favorite Dynamo player?
KM: I don't know the Dynamo players all that well, but I've heard that Wade Barrett is a great captain.
HD: If we set you up on a date with the Dynamo's most eligible bachelor, Stuart Holden, what would you want to do?
KM: If we went on a date, I think we would go to the beach, ride horses, and eat Chinese food. At the end, Stuart could teach me some soccer skills.
HD: And finally, what are you up to at the moment and what are your plans for the future?
KM: I'm currently working on an album, so I'm traveling back and forth between here and Nashville. I'm also doing some charity concerts, such as the one in Oklahoma next week with some other American Idols. Once my contract is over with American Idol in August, you can start looking for information on the release of my album.
HD: Thanks for the time, Kady, and we look forward to seeing you at the stadium on Saturday.
Kady Malloy will be singing the national anthem before Saturday's game against Chivas USA, and she will be available for pictures and autographs as part of Amigo Energy SoccerFest beginning at 6:00 p.m. outside the stadium. Click here for ticket information.
