2020 MLS Regular Season – Week 1
Portland Timbers vs. Minnesota United FC
Providence Park – Portland
March 1 – 7:30 PM ET
TV: FS1, FOX Deportes
STREAMING: MLS LIVE on DAZN in Canada
In the last of 13 Week 1 matchups, the Portland Timbers host Minnesota United FC in an intriguing showdown of Western Conference foes at Providence Park Sunday.
The Timbers subscribe to the theory the only thing better than one Chara is two, signing Diego's brother Yimmi as a Designated Player winger. They return Diego Valeri, who joins the new strike force of Jaroslaw Niezgoda and Felipe Mora, who look to fill the void left by Brian Fernandez's departure, while Dario Zuparic is expected to provide stability in central defense.
While attacking pieces Darwin Quintero and Angelo Rodriguez have been jettisoned, Adrian Heath returns the entire back six of a defensive unit that was +28 in goals against year over year. That included MLS Defender of the Year Ike Opara and the ageless Ozzie Alonso in defensive midfield. Newcomer Luis Amarilla arrives after leading the Paraguayan league in goals, while Tyler Miller looks to fill the shoes of 2019 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Vito Mannone.
