TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Loan
Unbeaten in their last 12, the Portland Timbers made a move to strengthen their championship hopes.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Timbers announced the acquisition of 20-year-old Argentinian midfielder Tomas Conechny, via a loan from Superliga Argentina club San Lorenzo.
There’s a purchase option on the 20-year-old, who will be added to Portland's roster pending a physical and receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa.
“We are pleased to announce the addition of Tomas Conechny to our group during this summer transfer window,” Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson said in a statement. “He is a player we have been following closely, and we believe he has a bright future ahead of him as a player who can play any of the attacking positions.
"We have been looking to add a young, talented and dynamic player and feel that, in Tomas, we have a player who can help contribute short-term, while also giving us a long-term solution in several positions. The opportunity to bring him to Portland was a unique one, and the fact he had already been watched live many times made this possible when we had to move quickly to acquire him.”
Conechny has played for San Lorenzo since 2016, making 14 appearances in the top division across multiple midfield positions.
On the international stage, he's earned 21 caps and scored seven goals at the youth levels for Argentina, representing his native country at the 2015 U-17 Sudamericano, the 2015 U-17 FIFA World Cup, the 2017 U-20 Sudamericano and the 2017 U-20 FIFA World Cup.
