Giovani dos Santos scored one of the goals of the season on Saturday, collecting an improvised pass from Emmanuel Boateng in the left side of the box and lifting a beautiful chip over Nick Rimando and inside the far post to give the LA Galaxy a 4-1 lead in their 5-2 win against Real Salt Lake.
The goal was immediately reminiscent of Gio’s stunner in the 2011 Gold Cup final, when the Mexican international dribbled around half the USMNT and chipped a shot from the right side of the area just over a leaping Eric Lichaj and into the top-left corner.
That goal sealed El Tri’s 4-2 win, booking Mexico a spot at the 2013 Confederations Cup and sending Bob Bradley to the chopping block. It also inspired this goal call, which – despite the fact that it inflicted a serious amount of USMNT pain – has long been one of my favorites:
Saturday’s goal was great, but, even when putting aside the magnitude of each strike, I think the 2011 chip was better. But that’s just my opinion. What do you say? Let us know – vote in the poll below.
