New York City FC became the second MLS club to mathematically clinch a playoff spot after Atlanta United defeated the Montreal Impact 2-0 on Sunday night in Week 29 action.
The 2017 postseason will mark the second straight playoff appearance for NYCFC, who are in their third year of existence.
After missing out on a playoff spot by 12 points in their 2015 expansion season, City qualified as the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed in 2016 under manager Patrick Vieira, only to fall 7-0 on aggregate to Toronto FC in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The club currently occupies the No. 2 seed heading into the final four weeks of the 2017 season.
Current Supporters' Shield leaders Toronto FC were the first team in the league to book their ticket to the 2017 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs back on September 9. There were scenarios entering the Week 29 weekend slate in which TFC could have clinched the Supporters' Shield or even a Knockout Round bye (top two teams in each conference secure a Knockout Round bye), but those did not materialize for the Reds.
