Pizarro hat trick leads Bremen past Hannover

Claudio Pizarro helped Werder Bremensecure secure a 4-1 win over Hannover 96 on Sunday.

Claudio Pizarro scored a hat-trick as Werder Bremen cruised past Hannover to keep alive their very slim hopes of playing in Europe next season.

Pizarro opened the scoring after 41 minutes, but Hannover keeper Robert Enke saved a penalty by Diego in the 61st minute, and then Jacek Krzynowek levelled the game after 69 minutes.

But Diego finally scored in the 77th minute before Pizarro netted twice more in the 80th and 84th minutes.

Bremen's second victory in three left them 10 points behind fifth place and the final Europa League spot, while relegation-threatened Hannover remained winless away from home.

Neither team offered much in the first half but Bremen grabbed the lead four minutes before the break. Pizarro attempted a shot from 18 yards, which was deflected of Christian Schulz high and over Enke.

Bremen had a chance to double the lead in the 61st minute as they were awarded a penalty for Pinto taking down Mesut Ozil. Diego's shot to the bottom left corner was blocked by Enke and Pizarro's rebound attempt went wide right.

Hannover equalised eight minutes later. Krzynowek collected the ball on the left side, moved past Per Mertesacker and then beat Bremen keeper Tim Wiese to the far right corner from 14 yards.

But Bremen pulled back ahead in the 77th minute. Alexandros Tziolis headed high into the middle of the area where a charging Diego chested the ball down and fended off a defender and beat Enke from nine yards.

Pizarro made it 3-1 for the hosts three minutes later as Mertesacker headed to the far right post where Pizarro nodded home from three yards.

And Pizarro finished off the scoring with six minutes left after Ozil's fine cross, which the Peruvian blasted into the far corner to complete his hat-trick.
