Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber and deputy commissioner Mark Abbott hosted a meeting on Wednesday at the request of Phoenix Rising FC, the USL side in charge of the city's bid to win the rights to an MLS expansion franchise.
With Cincinnati, Nashville and Miami already set to join MLS, Phoenix Rising is hoping to become one of two teams that will take the league to 28 sides in total in a future wave of expansion.
In February, Phoenix added investors to its potential ownership group, and in March the club released renderings of a potential new stadium for an MLS team.
