CHESTER, Pa. — Goalkeeper John McCarthy’s spot start helped the Philadelphia Union defeat the Harrisburg City Islanders 3-1 Wednesday in the fourth round of the US Open Cup.


McCarthy, making his season debut, stopped four shots to help Philadelphia advance to the round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year. Derrick Jones and CJ Sapong netted first-half tallies, and Marcus Epps scored in the final 45 for the Union.


Jonathan Mendoza scored in the 37th minute for Harrisburg City, who are winless in five Open Cup pairings against the Union.
