TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Re-signed
The Philadelphia Union are bringing back one of the key contributors to their 2020 Supporters' Shield run, announcing in a Friday release the club has re-signed left back Kai Wagner.
The deal keeps Wagner with the Union through the 2022 season, with a club option for 2023.
“We are delighted to have come to an agreement with Kai on a new deal,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in Friday's release. “Kai has been one of the best left backs in our league since he arrived, and we believe he is still far from his ceiling. We ask our defenders to dominate an entire flank by themselves, and Kai continually shows he is up to the challenge.”
Wagner has been a standout performer at his position since arriving to the club in 2019, starting 30 games and racking up eight assists in his debut MLS season before recording one goal and two assists while starting all 14 of his appearances in 2020.
The 23-year-old started his professional career in his native Germany, where he suited up for SSV Ulm 1846, Schalke 04 and Würzburger Kickers before joining the Union.
