TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Extension
The Philadelphia Union and captain Alejandro Bedoya have agreed to a contract extension, the club announced Thursday. The deal is through 2021 with a club option for 2022.
Bedoya, 32, has been a mainstay with Philly since joining the club during the 2016 season, with 103 appearances during that span. He has appeared in 55 of the club's last 58 regular season games, guiding the Union to a club-record season in 2019 that culminated with an Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs win over the New York Red Bulls.
“Ale has exceeded expectations we set for him as a leader on the pitch, in the locker room, and throughout the community,” sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a club statement. “At the Union, passion and drive are qualities that we look for, and nobody represents that better than Alejandro. It was very important for us to ensure the captain that led us to our first playoff win remains at our club to push us forward and set an example for our young core.”
Prior to joining Philly in 2016, Bedoya enjoyed a successful stint with Ligue 1's FC Nantes from 2013-16, where he made 96 appearances. He also has 66 caps with the US national team.
Bedoya and the Union kick off their 2020 season on the road against FC Dallas on Saturday (6 pm ET | MLS Live on ESPN+ in US, DAZN in Canada).
