Philadelphia Union 2, New York Red Bulls 1 | US Open Cup 2018 Recap

The Philadelphia Union reached the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Open Cup for the fourth time in five years, as they defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-1 at Talen Energy Stadium on Saturday in the Round of 16.

After the break, the Red Bulls looked like they were scoring first, as Kemar Lawrence’s shot was kick saved onto the post by Philly GK Andre Blake, before the follow-up attempt flew over the goal.

Philadelphia opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, as Haris Medunjanin turned a corner and hit an unstoppable blast. They followed it up with a goal by forward Cory Burke just after the hour mark.

New York didn’t give up, and Bradley Wright-Phillips came off the bench and scored in the 77th minute to cut the visitors’ deficit in half.

The Union will play the winner of the D.C. United-Orlando City Open Cup match at home in the quarterfinal round next month.
