David Villa showed on Sunday why New York City FC made him the first player in club history, turning in a wonderful performance in NYCFC’s 2-0 home-opening win over the New England Revolution at Yankee Stadium.
Now the soccer media is showing Villa a little love, with the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) voting the Spanish striker MLS Player of the Week for Week 2 of the 2015 season.
Villa was responsible for both of NYCFC’s goals. He put the expansion club on the board in the 19th minute, playing a quick give-and-go with Ned Grabavoy and hitting a curler inside the far post (WATCH ABOVE). He later helped NYCFC seal the game in the 84th minute, creatively working away from a defender in the box before hitting an inch-perfect cross that forward Patrick Mullins tapped into an empty net (WATCH).
The goal and assist were the first in the 32-year-old Villa’s MLS career. He's the second Designated Player to win the MLS Player of the Week award in 2015 after Toronto FC forward Jozy Altidore took home the Week 1 honors.
Villa and his New York City FC teammates will get back on the field this Saturday, when they travel west to take on the Colorado Rapids (4pm ET, MLS Live). NYCFC will return home on Saturday, March 28, when they host Sporting Kansas City at Yankee Stadium.
