Jermaine Jones' next move has been uncertain for weeks now, and the rugged midfielder did little to clear up his cloudy future with a new Instagram post in the wake of the New England Revolution's season-ending loss to D.C. United.
Posting a photo of himself walking away from the camera in a Revs kit, the veteran US international extended a valedictory-sounding message of gratitude to New England supporters on the social media site Friday morning – and announced his intention to spend time with his wife and children, who live in Southern California.
“I am so thankful what has happened in one and a half years with the club, the teammates & fans, the city of Boston!” wrote the German-American star. “I appreciate the love from everybody! I'm going home now and finally enjoying my family! Very excited to see what will be the next step in our life!”
Jones signed a year-and-a-half contract with the Revs when he made his move to MLS after the 2014 World Cup, a deal set to expire at the close of the current season. Recent media reports have stated that the Designated Player has been holding talks with the club on a renewal, but to no avail. He has previously stated a preference for a long-term contract so that he can justify relocating his family to Boston.
Jones spearheaded New England's blistering late-season run to the 2014 MLS Cup final, where they lost to the LA Galaxy in extra time, but has been hampered by injuries and international duty this season.
He was sent off in the dying moments of Wednesday's 2-1 loss to D.C. at RFK Stadium after physically confronting referee Mark Geiger over a penalty kick no-call, and could face additional discipline imposed at the start of next season.
