One of the best defenders in MLS history is back in the league – as a new member of the New England Revolution's coaching staff.
The Revs announced the hiring of Carlos Llamosa as an assistant coach and scout on Tuesday, marking the former D.C. United and US national team standout's return to MLS after four seasons on Giovanni Savarese's staff at the New York Cosmos.
A key defensive cog in the D.C. dynasty that dominated the league's early years, winning three of the first four MLS Cup titles, the Colombian-born Llamosa carved out a 10-year MLS career with steady decision-making and stellar passing and tackling range. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1998 and earned 29 caps for his adopted country, including action in the 1999 Confederations Cup and 2002 World Cup.
After D.C., he went on to play for Miami Fusion FC, the Revolution and Chivas USA before moving into a coaching role with the Goats in 2010. Now 47, Llamosa helped the Cosmos win three NASL Soccer Bowl championships and three season championships during his stint on Long Island. He is joined on the Revs' staff by fitness coach Aidan Byrne, who departs New York City FC after two seasons with the Bronx club.
“We are excited to strengthen our staff with these two additions,” Revs head coach Jay Heaps said in a club release. “Carlos was an excellent player and an even better teammate, and we are thrilled to add his passion and energy to our team. We’re equally excited to add Aidan to our staff as his experience in MLS will make us stronger both on and off the field.”
