The semi-pro National Premier Soccer League has cancelled its 2020 season, according to a Thursday release on the league's website.
The decision came on the heels of the CDC's recommendation that there be no group activities for eight weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic, and was made unanimously by the NPSL's board of directors.
"This action was not taken lightly," NPSL board chairman Ken Farrell said in Thursday's statement. "Over the past few weeks, the league has spoken to many of its teams and affiliate organizations. Every situation is different and has its own set of circumstances. The NPSL is balancing the immediate needs of its teams, and ensuring that there is a successful, thriving league for years to come."
The NPSL (along with USL League Two) is widely recognized as the fourth division in the US Soccer pyramid, although it doesn't carry an official designation. The league includes 94 teams and typically plays from May to August, with most teams relying heavily on college players who return to school at the conclusion of the season.
