MLS SuperDraft 2025 Rules and Regulations

Selection Order

The MLS SuperDraft 2025 order is set by taking the reverse order of the Supporters’ Shield standings at the end of the 2024 MLS season, taking post-season performance into account. Expansion club San Diego FC will own the No. 1 overall selection. The following 11 selections are from teams that did not qualify for the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs beginning with the team with the fewest 2024 regular season points per game. The remaining 18 positions are ranked by the fewest regular season points per game among the teams that were eliminated in the same round of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. If clubs are tied, the tie-breaking mechanism set forth in the MLS Competition Manual shall apply.

Procedural Rules for MLS SuperDraft 2025

  • Draft rounds: MLS SuperDraft 2025 will include three rounds. Rounds 1, 2, and 3 shall be conducted on Friday, Dec. 20, 2024.
  • Selection clock: Teams are permitted four (4) minutes to make a selection in Round 1 and three (3) minutes to make a selection in Rounds 2 and 3.
  • Timeouts: Each team is permitted one (1) timeout. Timeouts are three (3) minutes in duration. Selections must be made immediately following the timeout (no additional time given). More than two (2) timeouts cannot be used consecutively.
  • Failure to make selection in designated time: Clubs that fail to make their selection in time must wait until the next selection is made, regardless if their choice is presented prior to the next club's decision. The team that was delinquent with its selection must immediately have its choice in hand following the selection of the club that followed. If not, the original club must again wait for the next selection to be made.
  • Trades: Prior to being announced, trades need to be verified and approved by the Commissioner and/or his designee. Trade announcements will not reveal the identity of players until those players have been contacted by their respective clubs. For example, Team A trades a "player to be named later" for Team B's first selection.
  • Team passing: In the event a team passes on a pick, the club shall be precluded from making any further picks for the remainder of MLS SuperDraft 2025.

Draft Eligibility

MLS clubs may draft players through MLS SuperDraft 2025 from the list of eligible players which may include:

  1. College players who are collegiate sophomores and above;
  2. Generation adidas players;
  3. Any former college player who departed college with remaining eligibility since the conclusion of the college season approximately one (1) year prior to the SuperDraft (i.e., since the conclusion of the 2023 college season) in order to compete as a professional in a league domestically; and
  4. Any other players specifically made available by the League (such as pre-signed College seniors or pre-signed internationals).

Any drafted player who opts to return to college in fall 2025 or turns professional will not be draft-eligible in the future. No player may be drafted twice.

SuperDraft Priority List

Unless claimed on Waivers, a player who was drafted by a particular club through the MLS SuperDraft and did not sign with the League is placed on that club's "SuperDraft Priority List" until December 31 of the year after the draft (i.e., for MLS SuperDraft 2025, until December 31, 2026), after which the club loses the priority rights to sign the player.
