Major League Soccer on Monday announced that the red card and accompanying fine and one-game suspension issued to Columbus Crew SC defender Michael Parkhurst in Saturday's Crew SC vs. New York City FC match has been rescinded due to a case of misidentification.
In the 86th minute of the April 16 game, referee Ted Unkel mistakenly gave Parkhurst a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. In the match report, the referee cites a case of mistaken identity, as the red card should have been issued to Crew SC defender Tyson Wahl.
As a result, Parkhurst will be available for Columbus' next match, against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, April 23 (7:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE). Wahl will be unavailable for the match due to the one-game suspension that accompanies a red card.
Additionally, Columbus Crew SC have submitted an appeal on behalf of Wahl to review the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. The appeal will be heard by the Independent Review Panel under the Appeal to Review a Red Card guidelines.
