Overview:
MLS NEXT is updating field dimensions for the U13 age group in 2024-25. MLS NEXT identified an area of opportunity when it comes to player development, and we believe that this is the optimal solution. This is a significant shift in youth soccer, and by reducing the field size, MLS NEXT anticipates a myriad of benefits that enhance our players’ long-term potential.
Objectives:
- For optimal player development, MLS NEXT is updating the field dimensions for the U13 age group.
- Introduce players to space instead of throwing them into space.
- Help players understand touches of consequence (touch with space, touch in traffic, touch under heavy pressure).
- Prioritizing more situations under pressure that require solutions based on technical ability over physical ability.
How MLS NEXT went about its process:
- MLS NEXT identified a growth opportunity by listening to coaches throughout the MLS NEXT landscape.
- MLS NEXT engaged with this opportunity by collaborating internally and researching with other international youth leagues.
- MLS NEXT took their recommendation to the Competition Working Group for guidance and feedback.
- MLS NEXT decided that this was the best solution for the development of our players.
- MLS NEXT communicated it to clubs during preseason so clubs can adjust and prepare.
- MLS NEXT will continue to monitor, discuss and decide about ongoing adjustments in the best interest of the league developing high quality players.
Execution:
- The goals will be adjusted to the penalty spot and the home team is required to line a box out with flat white cones provided by MLS NEXT.
- The field dimension range length is 86 to 96 yards. At the moment there is no width adjustment. The top of the original penalty box is now the goalkeeper box for goal kick guidance.
- There are unique exceptions for clubs if it is not possible to move the goals or the field is 100 yards long.
