Major League Soccer announced today that Interscope Records recording artist Jimmy Eat World and recording artist Plácido Domingo will perform live during the MLS Cup 2007 match. Major League Soccer's 12th annual MLS Cup features the Eastern Conference Champions taking on the Western Conference Champions at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The match will be broadcast live on ABC and TeleFutura on Sunday, Nov. 18 at Noon ET.
Jimmy Eat World will headline the halftime festivities with a live performance of songs from their new album Chase This Light. Having just entered the Billboard Top 200 at a career-high # 5, Chase This Light is the band's most stylistically varied, musically ambitious and lyrically brave effort. The result is an album that has earned an "A" rating from Entertainment Weekly by effortlessly combining deep, heartfelt expression with razor sharp hooks that have always been the band's stock in trade.
The Arizona-based band Jimmy Eat World is known for their classic pop single "The Middle" which propelled the 2001 album Jimmy Eat World to multi-platinum status. After years of flying under the radar the band was finally rewarded with sold out tours, an appearance on Saturday Night Live, an MTV Video Award nomination and invitations to tour with Green Day, Weezer and Blink-182. Both Jimmy Eat World and its gold-certified 2004 follow-up Futures earned critical acclaim on year-end lists from Spin, Rolling Stone, USA Today, Blender and Alternative Press among others.
Plácido Domingo will also join in the MLS Cup festivities by performing the National Anthem. Best known as a member of The Three Tenors, Domingo is a world-renowned, multifaceted artist: as a singer, his repertoire encompasses an unmatched 124 different roles; as an administrator, he is the General Director of Washington National Opera and Los Angeles Opera; and, as a conductor he has led operas at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, and Los Angeles Opera and concerts with such orchestras as the Chicago Symphony, National Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic.
Plácido Domingo is an eight-time Grammy Award winner for his recordings, which inevitably appear on the bestseller charts; at one time, seven of his albums appeared simultaneously on Billboard's top-selling charts of classical and crossover recordings. His repertoire spans the gamut from Mozart to Verdi, from Berlioz to Puccini, from Wagner to Ginastera, from Spanish and Neapolitan melodies to contemporary pop songs, and he has preserved all of it in a remarkable array of recordings, videos and films.
"Major League Soccer is pleased to welcome Jimmy Eat World and Plácido Domingo to highlight our 12th annual Championship match at MLS Cup 2007," said MLS Vice President of Special Events, Geoffrey Hayes. "With performers like Christina Aguilera, Michelle Branch, Paulina Rubio, Switchfoot, Lupe Fiasco and The Academy Is... highlighting past MLS events, we are proud to continue the tradition of providing world-class entertainment at our marquee events."
