On Wednesday it was announced that the upcoming international match between Mexico and Ecuador at the New Meadowlands Stadium has sold out with an excess of 75,000 fans. It is the first-ever soccer event at the new venue, which will also be the home of the NFL’s two New York teams, the Giants and Jets.
El Tri meet Ecuador at 9 p.m. ET on Fri., May 7. It is the first of three matches on U.S. soil for manager Javier Aguirre’s squad as they prepare for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the inaugural match against South Africa on June 11.
It’s the second straight sell-out in the New York Tri-State area for Mexico after a largely pro-Mexican crowd was dazzled by a 5-0 plastering of the U.S. National Team in the 2009 Gold Cup Final.
Following Friday’s match, Mexico will face two African teams in advance of their World Cup opener against the host nation. On May 10, El Tri tackle Senegal at Soldier Field in Chicago and then battles Angola at Houston's Reliant Stadium three days later.
Mexico are in the USA with a 17-man roster featuring Manchester United’s recent signing Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, former Chicago Fire maestro Cuauhtémoc Blanco and La Liga star Andrés Guardado, who has been recovering from an injury.
