The Chicago Fire's newest addition Brian McBride help lead the U.S. men's Olympic Team to a 1-0 victory over Japan today in group play of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
McBride was called up to the team by U-23 head coach and former Fire player Peter Nowak as one of three overage players on the roster for the Olympic Games. At 36-years-old, McBride is the oldest player in the tournament.
McBride started and played 74 minutes in the contest against Japan, playing up front alongside 19-year-old Freddy Adu.
"There were times when maybe we were a little far away from each other but there were plenty of times that we were able to link up and occupy their center backs," said McBride of his play with Adu. "One thing they did was keep pushing people on us and sometimes we took fouls and other times we held on and kept the ball moving. A game like that sometimes we need to be a bit closer, but I think overall it went well."
In the 47th minute, Stuart Holden finished a cross from Maurice Edu that was deflected by a Japanese defender, giving the United States the 1-0 margin of victory. While McBride and Adu continued to press in the offense, looking to double the lead, they also had the responsibility of covering defensively as well.
"We knew we didn't want to give them too much time on the ball because they like to find little spaces and little spots, and I thought the back four and the midfield kept it really tight," said McBride. "They didn't find their comfort zone, at least compared to games we've seen in the past. We were able to limit their chances to come at us. In the last 10-15 minutes when everyone was getting tired they didn't really have time to turn."
"I think we played a smart game. I think we kept our shape, especially in a game that we knew was going to be a trying game and physical. It was a good start."
Brian McBride and the USA return to action on Sunday, August 10 at 6:45 CT as they take on the Netherlands in the second game of group play. The game will be broadcast on the USA Network.
