Hoffenheim's fairytale start to their debut season in the Bundesliga came to an end as they went down 5-2 at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
Karim Haggui, Manuel Friedrich and Stefan Kiessling struck in the first-half before Tranquillo Barnetta and Kiessling again completed the rout late on to knock the top-flight new boys off the top of the table.
Vedad Ibisevic had brought the visitors back to 2-1 and Sejad Salihovic had made it 3-2 from the penalty spot, but it was not enough to stop Ralf Rangnick's side surrendering their 100% record.
It was Leverkusen's second straight win and lifted Bruno Labbadia's side to within one-point of new leaders Schalke.
The home side could have gone ahead after 6 minutes but Patrick Helmes - who came into the game with two goals in his first two games for his new club - mis-hit his shot after being set up by Kiessling.
Leverkusen though did not have to wait long to break the deadlock as Haggui headed home Barnetta's free-kick just two minutes later.
Switzerland international Barnetta was again involved as the hosts doubled their advantage, swinging in a corner for Friedrich to nod past Hoffenheim goalkeeper Ramazan Ozcan.
The visitors snatched a lifeline through Ibisevic in the 21st minute after his header rounded off a breakaway move, but Leverkusen re-established their two-goal cushion before the break.
Kiessling - looking to prove a point to Germany coach Joachim Low after being left out of the squad he named on Friday - slotted home from close range from Constant Djakpa's pass.
Hoffenheim though refused to lie down and netted again after 58 minutes, Salihovic sending Benedikt Fernandez the wrong way from the spot after Djakpa had fouled Ibisevic in the area.
But there was to be no dramatic late equaliser as Leverkusen ran away with it in the closing stages.
Barnetta cracked home a fine long-range strike and Kiessling rolled in his second after substitute Theofanis Gekas had nutmegged Per Nilsson and broken into the area as Hoffenheim tasted Bundesliga defeat for the first time.
