Lazio stamp Italia hardware past Samp

Lazio

Lazio beat Sampdoria 6-5 in a penalty shootout to win the Coppa Italia.

Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera saved Armando Campagnaro's kick before Ousmane Dabo struck his effort into the back of the net to hand Lazio their fifth Coppa Italia title and first since 2004.

Mauro Zarate had scored in the fourth minute for Lazio but Giampaolo Pazzini levelled the match for Sampdoria in the 32nd minute.

Lazio have automatically qualified for the Europa League next season.

"I am delighted," said a tearful Lazio coach Delio Rossi. "I think this is a fair result for the lads and for the work they have done throughout the year.

"It's a big reward for us and the win means so much more considering how much we have had to suffer tonight.

"It's great to have won in front of our home crowd."

Spurred on by the disappointment of their 10th position in Serie A, Lazio coped well with the threat of the lively Antonio Cassano and Pazzini.

Lazio, who won all of their Coppa Italia games and knocked out Milan and Juventus en route to the final, had a dream start.

Zarate got past two Sampdoria players before firing a right-footed shot from outside the area that beat Sampdoria goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi.

In the 14th minute, Cristian Ledesma's free-kick forced Castellazzi to make a save.

The Romans should have doubled their lead before the half-hour mark but Castellazzi came to the rescue for the Blucerchiati.

He parried away Aleksandar Kolarov's right-footed strike but only as far as Goran Pandev, whose close-range strike forced an instinctive save from the keeper.

Shortly after, Samp equalized.

Marius Stankevicius headed Cassano's cross from the left towards the area where Pazzini anticipated his marker before nodding the ball past Muslera.

Samp had a chance to take the lead before half-time when Cassano warmed the hands of Muslera with a stinging free-kick.

Pasquale Foggia's cross almost provided Zarate with the chance to score in the 54th minute, with the Argentinian just inches short of making contact.

With Lazio starting the second half brightly, Samp were largely on the back foot.

On the hour mark, Foggia fired high from close range from Pandev's cross.

At the other end, Cassano wasted a good chance by firing high over the bar with a team-mate unmarked on his left.

Zarate was then unable to get on the end of substitute Tommaso Rocchi's cross.

With five minutes remaining, Christian Brocchi fired high from long range as another chance for Lazio went by and the game headed into extra-time.

Samp had the momentum and Cassano fired just fired over the bar within four minutes of the restart.

Lazio then escaped unharmed in the second half of extra-time as Lorenzo De Silvestri's desperate clearance from Cassano's cross went just wide of the far post.

The game then went to penalties and Lazio prevailed to start a huge celebration at the Stadio Olimpico.
