Bayern Munich 2, Manchester United 1
If form is any indication of anything, Manchester United had the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal with Bayern Munich won before they stepped on the field at the Allianz Arena.
But domestic form means nothing on the continent, as Bayern earned a remarkable 2-1 victory thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Ivic Olica.
To make matters worse, Man U star Wayne Rooney limped off as the final seconds ticked off.
Rooney started things off for United, putting the visitors ahead in just the second minute with a deflected free kick.
The goal ignited the Bavarians to life, particularly the brilliant Franck Ribéry. The little Frenchman was everywhere, creating several good chances. But the breakthrough didn’t come until the 77th minute, and brilliance had nothing to do with it.
Ribéry’s free kick from just outside the United area deflected off Rooney and looped past the cross-footed Edwin van der Sar.
In the ninth minute, Olic took advantage of some calamitously slack play by Patrice Evra, sneaking past a cluster of Man U defenders and slotting his shot past van der Sar.
The second leg is on Wed., April 7, at Old Trafford.
Lyon 3, Bordeaux 1
Portuguese striker Lisandro López is enjoying his first season in France, and his brace against Bordeaux in the all-French CL quarterfinal led the way as Lyon emerged 3-1 winners.
The opener came in the 10th minute, when Lisandro was the lucky end recipient of a Bordeaux gift. Defender Sane's weak header fell kindly to Mathieu Bodmer, who rifled the ball across goal for Lisandro to tap in.
Marouane Chamakh then equalized in the 14th minute, heading home from close range after some tricky play by Youan Gourcuff in the right corner.
Brazilian Michel Bastos blasted the hosts ahead again in the 32nd minute after some dreadful defending, controlling a misplayed cross from Lisandro and smashing his shot into the side netting.
Lisandro then put the game out of reach with a penalty in the 77th minute.
