The Seattle Sounders are looking for a win - any kind of win - these days.
They got just the one they wanted thanks to an LA Galaxy draw, of all things.
A scoreless draw between the Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday night booked playoff spots for both LA and the Sounders, as the Quakes can't catch the Galaxy on points and can't match the Sounders on wins - the first tiebreaker - with one weekend left.
Seattle are in the midst of a six-game winless skid, including a club record four-game losing streak as they've fallen from first to fourth in the West. LA, meanwhile, collected four points from a pair of home games this week and sit secure in third, but saw their Supporters' Shield hopes come to an end on Sunday.
The two teams meet next Sunday night in Seattle for the last game of the MLS regular season, a contest rife with seeding implications.
San Jose (13-11-9, 48 points) can still technically catch the Colorado Rapids (14-10-9, 51 points) for the fifth and final Western spot, but it would take an absolutely unheard of pair of results to make the impossible dream a reality. The Quakes would have to beat FC Dallas next weekend and score at minimum 12 goals in the process to catch Colorado on the second tiebreaker (total goals), and hope the Rapids lose to the Vancouver Whitecaps by at least six while being shut out in order to leapfrog the Mile High Club based on the third tiebreaker (goal differential).
