David Bingham is switching sides in the California Clasico.
It was announced on Monday that the LA Galaxy acquired the right of first refusal for Bingham from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for up to $250,000 in Allocation Money. LA will send the Quakes $100,000 in General Allocation Money and $100,000 in Targeted Allocation Money for 2018, and could send an additional $50,000 in GAM to San Jose in 2019 depending on Bingham’s 2018 performance.
MLSsoccer.com reported in October that Bingham would likely leave San Jose following the 2017 season. The 28-year-old ‘keeper became the Quakes’ No. 1 ahead of the 2015 season, but lost his starting job to Andrew Tarbell in August. ESPN's Jeff Carlisle reported on Friday that San Jose and LA were working on the trade.
Bingham remains out of contract with MLS, meaning he’s not yet officially on LA’s roster. The Galaxy, who have traded away all three of their goalkeepers from the 2017 season in recent weeks, now have his MLS rights.
Bingham has started 95 of his 96 total appearances since joining the Quakes via weighted lottery ahead of the 2011 season. The Bay Area native has a 34-35-27 career record with 27 shutouts and a 1.24 goals-against average. A 2016 MLS All-Star, he has three career caps with the US men’s national team.
