The Hunt family, owners of MLS club FC Dallas, hoisted the NFL championship trophy in Miami after winning Super Bowl LIV with the Kansas City Chiefs, who beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.
The Chiefs last made a Super Bowl 50 years ago which was also the last time they won the NFL title in Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings in 1970.
The late Lamar Hunt and the Hunt family founded the Chiefs when they started as the Dallas Texans in 1960. The football team moved to Kansas City in 1963 and they have since become an institution in the city.
"It's a beautiful trophy and I can't think of a better conclusion to the 100th season of the NFL than receiving this trophy," Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt told a national television audience while receiving the NFL championship trophy. "I'm so happy for our players, coaches and fans, and especially [head coach] Andy Reid. No one deserves this trophy more than Andy Reid. I want to thank the Lord for blessing our family with all these incredible people who helped us bring this championship home. To the Chiefs Kingdom, you guys are world champions once again."
Kansas City has another sports title to celebrate after Sporting Kansas City's MLS Cup championship in 2013, the Major League Baseball World Series title with the Kansas City Royals in 2015 and now the Super Bowl with the Chiefs.
The Hunts were already investor-operators in two MLS clubs (Columbus and Kansas City) when they took over at FC Dallas in 2003 (at the time the club was still called the Dallas Burn). They eventually moved the team into a state-of-the-art soccer stadium complex which opened in Frisco, Texas in 2005. Today that facility is also home to the new National Soccer Hall of Fame, which was inaugurated in 2019.
The world-class complex is a tribute to the vision of the late Lamar Hunt, who passed away in 2006 and is widely considered one of the most influential sports figures in North America. His contributions to the NFL and MLS have seen him inducted in the Hall of Fame for both sports and he also has two trophies named after him: the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (soccer) and the AFC Championship trophy (football).
The Hunt family continue to run FC Dallas after selling Kansas City and Columbus clubs to new MLS investors in 2006 and 2013, respectively. In addition to serving as chairman and CEO of the Chiefs, Clark Hunt is the current chairman and CEO of FC Dallas and his brother, Dan Hunt, is the MLS club's president.
FC Dallas have qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs in 17 of 24 seasons and advanced to the MLS Cup final in 2010, losing a heartbreaker to the Colorado Rapids. The team also won the U.S. Open Cup in 1997 and 2016 and the Supporters' Shield as the best MLS regular season team in 2016.
FC Dallas enter the 2020 season featuring several of the most promising youth prospects in MLS, products of one of the most successful academy programs in North America. A handful of them played for the senior US national team in its first match of 2020: right back Reggie Cannon, attacker Jesus Ferreira and midfielder Brandon Servania.
