Forget Sunil Chhetri and everyone watching back in India. The Kansas City Wizards attracted more international coverage than any issue in MLS this week for an entirely different – and lamentable - reason.
Forward Kei Kamara takes the credit for a highlight clip seen by millions of people around the globe. His goalmouth miss last Saturday against the Los Angeles Galaxy made reels worldwide and was an instant YouTube sensation, with one clip alone registering 1,055,722 views under the heading “Worst Miss of the Century.”
Not only did it make the rounds on Yahoo.com’s front page, ESPN clip packages and local sports segments in the U.S., but it also got its due on several major international soccer sites.
The Sun famously called it “The Miss of the Century."
The site of Italian sports daily Corriere dello Sport even doubled Kamara’s pleasure by adding his 51st minute miss on the other end of the field. Their write-up says that he “missed the incredible.”Spain’s Marca.com noted on their site how Kamara “had the easiest goal of his career in front of him.” The video registered 141 comments with the last one reading: “the goal could have been one kilometer wide and the guy would still miss it … poor guy.”
The flub’s journey around the world finally takes us to A Bola in Portugal, where the headline on the page featuring the Kamara video reads: “A goal that was impossible to miss … or maybe not!”
But for his part, Kamara’s making the best of his newfound notoriety.
On his Twitter account, Kamara said on Monday: “Now everyone know who KEI KAMARA is, make sure u keep following him and don't BLINK on his BLESS CAREER. Take the week to enjoy the past.”
And they did.
