MARTÍNEZ SHOOTS FOR SCORING STREAK RECORD – AGAIN – ON FOX SATURDAY

As the 2019 season heads toward the stretch drive and the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, Josef Martínez is once again catching fire for Atlanta United.
Since his return from Copa América duty with Venezuela, Martínez has scored in each of his past five games with Atlanta United. Before his departure, Martínez netted goals in his last three league contests – and the eight-game streak with a goal is now the third-longest in MLS history.
Martínez himself holds the league record, scoring in nine consecutive matches last season, from June 30-Aug. 24, as Atlanta United made a charge toward an eventual MLS Cup championship. Martínez equaled the mark first set by Diego Valeri of the Portland Timbers, who scored in nine consecutive games from July-Sept. 24, 2017.
Martínez will look to equal his MLS record this Saturday, when Atlanta United face the LA Galaxy at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (5 p.m. ET, FOX / FOX Deportes).

GIL HITS RECORD PACE AS REVOLUTION SHOOT FOR LONGEST UNDEFEATED RUN

Carles Gil has certainly been one of the hottest players in Major League Soccer over recent weeks. Pacing the New England Revolution’s current 11-game undefeated streak, which began on May 11, Gil has scored five goals and added five assists.
Over each of the past three games – a 4-0 win vs. Vancouver on July 17, a 2-0 win at FC Cincinnati on July 21, and a 4-1 win vs. Orlando City SC on July 27 – Gil has scored a goal and added an assist in each game. The three-game streak with at least one goal and one assist in each contest is one short of the MLS record, set by Diego Serna with the Miami Fusion in 2001, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Gil will face a challenge in equaling the record – and seeing if the Revolution can equal their club-record undefeated streak, set first in 2004 – when they play host to the Los Angeles Football Club at Gillette Stadium on Saturday evening.

ARENA’S START WITH THE REVOLUTION APPROACHING RECORD SUCCESS

Bruce Arena has certainly made an impression with the New England Revolution. Since taking over as the club’s bench boss on June 2, he has led the club to six wins and two draws in eight matches – as the Revolution has also rolled to an 11-game undefeated streak, the second-longest in the club’s 24-year history.
The eight games undefeated from the start of a head coach’s tenure with a club is tied for the second-longest such streak in MLS history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The record is 12 games undefeated from the start of a coach’s run – Lothar Osiander, in the first 12 games of the LA Galaxy’s existence in 1996 (12-0-0), and Jeff Cassar, who led Real Salt Lake to a 6-0-6 record after taking over in 2014.

LAFC, ATLUTD FLURRY ONE OF MOST ACTION-FILLED SEQUENCES IN MLS HISTORY

The Los Angeles Football Club and Atlanta United created some real magic in their meeting on ESPN last Friday evening at Banc of California Stadium.
With Atlanta United leading 1-0 from a second-minute goal by Mo Adams, LAFC rebounded with four first-half goals from the 33rd minute – from Adama Diomande (33’), Diego Rossi (38’), Carlos Vela (42’) and Eduard Atuesta (45’). The four goals in a 12-minute stretch equaled the eighth-fastest such streak by a single team in MLS history.
FASTEST 4 GOALS SCORED (ONE TEAM, SINGLE GAME)

Not to be outdone, Atlanta United got a goal from Josef Martínez in first-half stoppage time. With 14 minutes between the five goals scored, it equaled the sixth-fastest stretch of five goals by both teams in a single game in MLS history.

REAL’S RIMANDO MOVES UP CHARTS OF ONE MORE CAREER RECORD

In his 20th and final MLS season, Nick Rimando was named as a Commissioner’s Pick for the 2019 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target.
Already the all-time MLS record-holder in numerous categories, including games played (503), shutouts (150), saves (1,667) and goalkeeper wins (216), Rimando will leave the league on the record books in one more category – most All-Star Game selections.
Rimando was selected as an MLS All-Star for the ninth time in 2019 – tied for the third-most in MLS history – his first coming in 2001. He has now appeared in six matches, after playing the final third of Wednesday’s contest vs. Atlético de Madrid at Exploria Stadium in Orlando.
