"It's the pinnacle for me," Johnston told Toronto FC TV. "It is every kid's dream to play professional soccer and represent your country. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame is the biggest honour."

The Scottish Football Hall of Fame was launched in 2004 and Johnston joins players such as Denis Law, Kenny Dalglish, Brian Laudrup and Henrik Larsson who have previously been honoured.

Johnston was recognized for his performances for Scotland and also his goal scoring record with Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers. "I think people realize the magnitude of what I did but it goes beyond all the goals that I scored. It is about the players that I played with and also the coaches and managers that take you to a different level. You don't receive this award by doing it on your own. They help you all the way to become a better player. It's very humbling to receive this honour and it is something that will live with me forever."

Johnston started his career at Partick Thistle and then moved to Watford where he was an FA Cup Finalist in 1984. He moved to Celtic the same year and was a Scottish Cup winner and League Championship winner with Celtic scoring 52 goals in 140 appearances. Three years later he moved to Nantes in France where he scored 22 goals in two seasons. He moved back from France to Rangers and scored 46 goals in 100 games winning two League Championships. At the international level he won 38 caps scoring 14 goals and played in the 1990 World Cup Finals. He also had short spells at Everton, Hearts and Falkirk.
