How bad has it been for MLS teams playing in Mexico?

The CONCACAF Champions League is set to resume next week with four MLS teams facing off against four Liga MX teams. The Seattle Sounders face Club América, D.C. United will play Querétaro, Real Salt Lake take on Tigres UANL and the LA Galaxy are playing Santos Laguna.

Last season, Liga MX and MLS faced off just twice, with both matches involving the Montreal Impact. The Impact played Pachuca in the quarterfinals and Club América in the finals.

Somewhat surprisingly, they were able to get draws in both games in Mexico, which helped them advance past Pachuca on away goals and into the semifinals. Despite their 1-1 draw in Estadio Azteca in the final, Montreal were unable to take home the CCL trophy after losing at home 4-2. Those two results in Mexico were a couple of the best in the history of MLS teams traveling to Mexico.

In 42 competitive games in Mexico, MLS teams have managed a total of just two wins and eight draws. The two wins came during the group stage of the 2011-12 Champions League, as FC Dallas upset Pumas in Mexico City and the Seattle Sounders defeated Monterrey. It should be said that the two Mexican teams did not play their full starting lineups.
