Houston Dynamo 1, FC Dallas 1 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

The Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas left things for late, but neither team could find a winner in a 1-1 Texas Derby draw as part of Heineken Rivalry Week Thursday night at BBVA Compass Stadium.

FC Dallas (13-5-7) took the lead in the 83rd minute when Michael Barrios fought off Andrew Wenger for the ball and slotted through the legs of Joe Willis, who raced off his line to challenge.

But just when it appeared Houston (7-11-7) would drop a sixth straight game, Ronaldo Peñaequalized two minutes from full time with his first MLS goal.

The Venezuelan, who arrived on a permanent transfer from Caracas FC on July 5, took a pass from Tomas Martinez, settled the ball and snuck a shot past a diving Jimmy Maurer and inside the near post.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Haven’t we seen this before? After the rivals both scored in the opening eight minutes at BBVA Compass Stadium a month ago, Houston and Dallas scored five minutes apart in the final seven minutes in matching 1-1 draws. The Dynamo will be the happier side after rallying to snap a five-match losing streak. FC Dallas, meanwhile, ensured they’ll stay atop the West heading into Week 27.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH
: What a time to score your first MLS goal. Peña showed poise with his first touch and a clinical finish past Maurer’s outstretched arm.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: When momentum shifted to the visitors after halftime, Willis was equal to the task. The best of his three saves came in the 66th minute when he ranged to his left to parry away a Maxi Urruti shot with both hands.
