Toronto FC's Kevin Harmse has been called up to the Canada squad for World Cup Qualifiers against Honduras and Mexico next week. Harmse is looking to earn his sixth cap since making his international debut in March 2007 against Bermuda. It will be his first taste of World Cup action.
"The season with Toronto hasn't gone as planned and as I would have hoped, but it is great to get a chance with the national team. Having a call-up now is exciting and very important for me," said Harmse. "It's a difficult situation that I'm going into with Canada not having won so far in the group, but you take what you can get, and hopefully I can get a chance to prove myself. I knew that if I kept working hard, my chance would come again."
Harmse is set to continue as a central defender for Toronto FC in Saturday's game at New York after impressing in that position against Houston Dynamo last week. "I feel very comfortable as a central defender," said Harmse. "I just want to be in the side so I'm not bothered where I play as long as I'm on the pitch. We were struggling at the back and I was needed there so I was happy to play there. It's a lot easier playing at the back because the whole game is in front of you and you just need to read the game well."
Toronto FC's Greg Sutton is also named in the Canada squad for the forthcoming World Cup Qualifiers.
