BMO Field doesn’t bring back a flood of positive memories for Gustav Svensson, but it does offer up additional motivation for the Seattle Sounders FC midfielder ahead of the MLS Cup rematch with Toronto FC Wednesday (7:30 pm ET | FS1 - Full TV & streaming info).
“You have a lot of memories from last year, not really good ones so you want to change that,” Svensson said after training Tuesday. “We are very motivated to beat Toronto and show them that last year was only luck.”
Svensson and his Sounders teammates will look to put the pain of last year’s MLS Cup loss at BMO Field behind them and are hoping to use a positive result against TFC to springboard what has been a difficult 2018 season to this point.
Of course, a key to beating Toronto is limiting Sebastian Giovinco’s touches on the ball, especially with Jozy Altidoreout following foot surgery. Svensson said they have a plan for that.
“Maybe give him an early tackle or something, show him that we take this game very seriously,” Svensson said. “Then just be close to him, don’t give him too much space. He’s [faster] than you think so have to make sure you follow his runs.”
