Gringo Report: Yanks ousted from Mexican playoffs

Jose Francisco Torres (right) and Pachuca were eliminated from the Mexican Primera Division playoffs.

The weekend has gone, and with it the season of a few Americans south of the border.

In Mexico’s Primera División, the three amigos – José Torres, Hérculez Gómez and Marco Vidal – were eliminated from the playoffs as Pachuca fought tooth and nail to draw Monterrey 3-3 (4-4 on aggregate) in the second leg of the quarterfinal series.

Despite tying, Monterrey’s superior finish in the league table gave them the right to move on to the semifinals.

Torres closed out his season with a 90-minute appearance, while Gómez played the final 32 and tallied an assist on the Tuzos’ final goal. Vidal wasn’t summoned for the match.

The American fullback started on the left of a five-man defensive line, but was subbed out at halftime, when los Gladiadores were already down 3-0.

Isaac Acuña didn’t dress for las Águilas.

Misfortune extended into Mexico’s Liga de Ascenso, where Indios are out of the playoffs after again losing to Albinegros 1-0 (2-0 agg.).

Forward Joaquín Alonso wasn’t in Indios’ gameday roster.

Further south, in Argentina’s top flight, Michael Hoyos went 45 minutes in Estudiantes de La Plata’s 2-0 shutout of Huracán.

In the 26th minute, Hoyos scored a tremendous goal, receiving the ball behind the defense and finishing with his first touch. However, he was ruled offside and his tally was canceled.

With the win, Los Pincharratas retook sole ownership of first place and are now two points ahead of Vélez Sarsfield in the hot race for the top spot.
