American midfielder Joe Corona saw 61 minutes of action on Wednesday as Tijuana jumped out to a 2-0 aggregate lead against Veracruz in the first leg of the Mexican Liga de Ascenso final.
The San Diego native started on the left flank for No. 1-seeded Xoloitzcuintles — who reached the final after drawing both semifinal legs against Albinegros — and hounded the Tiburones defense with his dynamic runs and crosses.
The second leg is scheduled for Saturday at Tijuana's Estadio Caliente. Should the home team end on top after that, not only will they have their first trophy in club history, but they'll also have half their ticket booked in their quest to reach the top flight.
Under the current promotion system, the champion of the Apertura 2010 will face off against the champion of the upcoming Clausura 2011 to determine promotion to Mexico's Primera División.
