Gold Cup: Preliminary rosters revealed, MLS heavily represented

Jairo Arrieta celebrates his PK for Costa Rica vs. Canada

CONCACAF revealed on Friday the 35-man preliminary rosters for all 12 teams participating in this summer's Gold Cup, and once again countries from around the region drew on a considerable amount of MLS talent to fill out their rosters.

Costa Rica led the way among countries other than the United States and Canada, picking four players from the MLS ranks, while Haiti and Honduras each selected two MLS-based players. Honduras, however, opted not to select the likes of San Jose's Víctor Bernárdez and Colorado's Hendry Thomas, who is recovering from injury, instead looking to a largely domestic-based squad to get the job done. The Quakes' Marvin Chávez and Vancouver's Johnny Leverón were included on the roster, however.

The United States and Canada also had sizeable domestic represenation on their preliminary rosters, with the 19 of the 35 players on the US roster based in MLS and 11 of Canada's 35-man roster also based in the league.

Teams will be required to submit a final, 23-man roster for the tournament on June 27, with the opening game set for July 7. Teams will also have an opportunity to swap in up to four players from their 35-man roster after the conclusion of the group stages.
