The Mexican national team defeated Ecuador 4-2 on March 28, 2007 and more recently on March 2, 2008, the Under-23 teams of Mexico and Australia tied 1-1.

The Gold Cup has seen record attendances and television ratings in each of the past two installments of the competition (2005 and 2007). The top two teams in each group will advance to the next round along with the two best third-place teams.

In the 2007 Gold Cup, Mexico finished runner-up to the United States, which has won the past two Gold Cups. Mexico had a successful run through the tournament that saw them lose just once until their 2-1 defeat at the hands of the United States. They knocked off Cuba, Panama, Costa Rica and Guadeloupe on their way to the final.

Guadeloupe had a strong showing in 2007, falling to Mexico 1-0 in the semi-final. Panama failed to make it out of the group stages and Nicaragua did not participate. Mexico has brought the Gold Cup title home seven times in the tournament's history, winning in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1993, 1996, 1998 and 2003.
