THE GOAL KING: CHRIS WONDOLOWSKI CEMENTS HIS PLACE IN MLS HISTORY
On a day that was long anticipated, it wasn’t just enough for Chris Wondolowski to become the all-time leading goalscorer in Major League Soccer history.
Wondolowski came into last Saturday’s game between his San Jose Earthquakes and the Chicago Fire one goal behind Landon Donovan for the all-time goalscoring lead, with 144 career goals entering the contest. With his first goal in the first half, Wondolowski equaled the record, then just three minutes into the second half, he had sole possession of the all-time record.
With the record-breaking goal, Wondolowski took possession of the record that had been held by Landon Donovan for nearly five years, since he took over as the all-time leading MLS goalscorer in 2014. Eric Wynalda took the mantle with the only goal in the inaugural MLS game in 1996, and by season’s end, Roy Lassiter held the title as the Golden Boot winner following the first season.
Lassiter regained the leadership early in the 1999 season, and since then, five more players have held the title of the leading goalscorer in Major League Soccer history, with Wondolowski’s ascension last weekend.

Wondolowski didn’t leave it with just breaking the record – he had to do it with as big a splash as possible. Wondolowski netted two more goals, in the 74th and 76th minutes – his third and fourth of the game. It was the most goals he’d scored in a game in his MLS career, and became the 12th player in MLS history to score at least four goals in a single game.

Wondolowski’s historic day also moved him up the charts in other goalscoring records. With his fifth game with three goals or more, Wondolowski is now tied for second-most hat tricks in MLS history, one behind Atlanta United’s Josef Martínez.

Wondolowski also equaled Landon Donovan’s total of 41 game-winning goals in netting all the goals in the Quakes’ victory, and is now tied for fourth with most multiple-goal games in league history.

BREAKING DOWN WONDOLOWSKI’S GOALS: BY THE NUMBERS
Chris Wondolowski has made his goalscoring name as a poacher, especially late in matches. Of Wondolowski’s 148 league goals, the majority have come in the final half-hour of matches, and he has scored more goals from the 76th minute on as in any 15-minute block.

Wondolowski has scored 81 goals with his left foot, 38 goals with his right foot, 28 goals with his head, and one with another body part. Of the 148 goals, 48 have come in the goal area, 97 have come in the penalty area, and five have come from outside the box.
Of his goals, 25 have come from penalty kicks. The majority have come from open play, 102 (with 38 of those coming on crosses, and 10 others coming on rebounds). A further 21 goals have been scored from set pieces (15 on corner kicks, 6 from free kick services).

Wondolowski has scored against 24 different teams – the most of any player in MLS history. He has only one club he has yet to score against – FC Cincinnati, after going without a goal when the clubs met in their lone appearance this season on May 4.
Wondolowski has also scored 10 or more goals in each of the last nine seasons entering this year, the most seasons in double digits in MLS history, and by far the most in consecutive seasons.
D.C.’S HAMID, TORONTO FC ENGAGE IN RECORD SHOT-FILLED NIGHT
When he faced a nearly record-setting 36 total attempts at goal, D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid put together one of the finest performances in MLS shot-stopping history.
Hamid was credited with 12 saves in the scoreless draw with Toronto FC on May 15 at Audi Field – tied for the fourth-most saves in recording a shutout of any goalkeeper in league history, and the most of any goalkeeper in a clean sheet in a decade.

• Whitecaps FC started their road swing with a second consecutive result on their travels, reaching a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday evening. Derek Cornelius scored his first career goal in MLS for the late equalizer.
  
• The teams reached a 2-2 draw in their lone meeting a year ago, Aug. 18 at BC Place. The draw ended a two-game Red Bulls winning streak in the series, which are their only two victories vs. Whitecaps FC in eight meetings all-time in league play.

• The Galaxy suffered a fourth consecutive loss with a second consecutive shutout, falling 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids at Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday evening. The four-game losing slide is the club’s longest since 2017, three games shy of the club record.
  
• Home form has ruled in the all-time series. The Galaxy have won both meetings in Carson, Calif., including a 4-3 win last July 29 in the only encounter last season. The Galaxy also claimed a 4-2 triumph on Sept. 11, 2016.
  
• Orlando City have won both meetings played in Florida, including a 2-1 victory on April 15, 2017, in the last meeting at Orlando City Stadium. OCSC also took a 4-0 win in the first meeting ever between the teams in 2015.

returned between the posts for the first time since April 20, credited with one save in recording his second shutout of the season. Blake has not conceded a goal in his last 198 minutes played, over three matches. … The Union were shut out at Talen Energy Stadium for the first time this season, their first home blanking since last Oct. 21 (0-1 vs. New York Red Bulls).
TIMBERS:
Sebastian Blanco
recorded his fifth assist of the season, all coming over the last six matches. Blanco has been involved in seven of the last nine Timbers goals, since April 13 (two goals, five assists). … With a win in the final game of the season-opening road swing, the Timbers could record the second-most victories of teams starting a season with lengthy road trips. The Columbus Crew won 5 of 7 games to start on the road in 1999; last year, LAFC won 4 games from a 6-game trip. The Timbers’ 12-game road start is the longest in MLS history.

• The Dynamo snapped a two-game winless run, coming from behind to defeat D.C. United 2-1 at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday evening. Memo Rodríguez scored his fifth goal of the season and Tommy McNamara added his first, the goals coming in successive minutes midway through the second half, matching the quickest span of goals in the club’s history.
  
• The teams split their two league meetings a year ago, each winning on their home ground. Minnesota United took a come-from-behind 2-1 win on April 28 at TCF Bank Stadium, their first victory vs. the Dynamo. Then, the Dynamo captured a 3-0 victory July 7 at BBVA Compass Stadium.

• Crew SC suffered a second consecutive defeat, their seventh in the past eight games, falling 1-0 to Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field on Saturday evening.
  
• Crew SC won the lone meeting between the teams a year ago, a 2-1 win on Sept. 22 at Mapfre Stadium, their first home victory in the series since 2011. The Rapids had come away with points on their previous two trips to Columbus.
  
• The Rapids won the last meeting at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, a 2-1 win on June 3, 2017, their first home win in the series since 2012. • The teams met twice a season ago. Sounders FC won 3-0 at CenturyLink Field on Sept. 1, their consecutive win in the series at home; Sporting’s win there in 2016 was just their second win ever in Seattle, after SKC won 1-0 in 2009, the first meeting ever between the clubs.

• Chris Wondolowski became the all-time leading goalscorer in MLS history, netting all four goals in San Jose’s 4-1 win against the Chicago Fire at Avaya Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Wondolowski now has 148 goals for his MLS league career, matching and surpassing the total recorded by Landon Donovan (145 goals) on the historic afternoon.
  
• Wondolowski also became the 12th player in MLS history to net four or more goals in a game. It was the fifth hat trick of his MLS career, tied for second-most in MLS history, and he recorded his 41st game-winning goal, tied for the most in league history. It was his 21st multiple-goal game, tied for fourth in the league annals.
  
• The Quakes are undefeated in the last four home meetings in the series, following a 1-1 draw last Aug. 18 in the lone meeting between the teams. TFC last won in northern California in 2010, a 3-1 win at Buck Shaw Stadium.
