It’s been an impressive year for former Vancouver Whitecaps Homegrown Alphonso Davies.
The 20-year-old fullback featured in 33 games with Bundesliga's Bayern Munich in the 2019-2020 season, registering two goals and six assists. With Davies, Bayern earned five trophies — UEFA Champions League title, the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal (German Cup), the DFL-Supercup and the UEFA Super Cup — and went on 23-game win streak and unbeaten for 32 matches.
He was awarded Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Year, named runner-up for UEFA’s Defender of the Year and made the Champions League Best XI for 2019-20.
Last week, he was announced as the 2020 Canadian Player of the Year for the second time in three years and Tuesday was revealed as co-winner of the 2020 Lou Marsh Trophy as the top Canadian athlete of the year.
The Lou Marsh Trophy has been awarded annually since 1936 and Davies is the first male soccer player to win. He and Christine Sinclair are the only soccer players to have ever received the trophy (she won in 2012 after the Canadian Women’s National Team’s bronze medal in the London Olympics).
Davies shares the award with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who won Super Bowl LIV in February.
